A soundbox is a small device designed to play, and sometimes record or transmit, sounds. While it is typically music, more recent developments in soundboxes have allowed for live communication between several people at once, over great distances. Soundboxes are slowly replacing the larger, more cumbersome and difficult to use communication booths. The soundboxes used specifically for communication are known as talkboxes.
Though expensive, as technology improves, the prices are slowly dropping. It is estimated that there are more than 1,000 soundboxes across Atla, with the greatest number in Sed City. Despite their quick growth and ease of use, government offices and city centers are slow to adopt the new technology. Not until it can be proven to be as reliable as a communication booth.
