The Mig is the standard form of currency on Atla. The pint is a smaller form of currency, usually found circulated in the form of coins. There are 100 pints in a single mig.
It took fifteen years after the signing of Atla’s Provincial Constitution before the mig fully saturated the nation’s markets. At the signing of the Constitution the government declared that the mig and pint were the only forms of currency acceptable, and that the financial foundation of the country was based upon them (with a federal reserve based on gold). Despite the proclamation it took over a decade before all the unique and local currency found throughout Atla could be phased out. Among the last areas to see the financial revamp were Bree, Lands End, Bedrin and Pelenak.
Today, FrostRight city is the only city in the nation to still use its own currency (other than the protected wilds of Sed). However, any trade the city makes with the rest of the nation is done in mig and pints, making their own money largely irrelevant to Atla’s financial system.
Mig usually come in paper bills of a bluish, pink hue. They are intricate in design and printed using many classified techniques to prevent counterfeiting. A few mig coins have been circulated in the past and are eagerly sought by collectors. The last of these was minted in 235EM. Pints are entirely coin based and come in a variety of values. One, five, ten, twenty and fifty pint coins are the most common, with a few other values having seen circulation in the past. The most notable of these now defunct coins was the Third, or the 33.3 mig coin. When it was released in 100EM as part of the nation’s centennial, it caused tremendous backlash and incurred heavy ridicule. Business owners and merchants alike claimed that, because three Thirds would never equal a full mig it would throw stocks into chaos and see huge discrepancies in financial records when the coin was used. Sherman’s, one of the nation’s largest retail store chains, posted a net loss of 100,000 mig entirely from use of the Third in their stores. Before the end of 100EM the coin was taken out of circulation. It is to this day the most highly sought after coin in the post-constitutional era.
The mig is the highest valued currency on the world market. It takes 1.43 Krisos Runes, the nearest valued currency, to equal one mig. The highest value the mig has ever reached was in 225 when the first railcarts went into production and the nearest currency, the Redding Dullar, was valued at .23 mig. The lowest value it ever reached was shortly after the Grand Provincial Councilor declared war on Peretos and Mogadash. At the time 1.05 Runes made up one mig. It is expected however, that the mig will fall in value slightly as raillines spread across the world. While the exact drop can only be guessed, most financial analysts feel it will drop no more than ten pints in relation to the Rune.
