The City of FrostRight

Knowledge of FrostRight city comes only from the few dignitaries and explorers who have returned alive from the end of the world. It is currently under the rule of a Shaman-Priest whose name is still unknown officially, though dozens of names have been spoken whenever anyone refers to the man. The city’s government seems to operate the same way a standard monarchy does, with the Shaman-Priest giving the final word as declared by the people’s gods. Evidence of this comes from the fact that what little information we have, it is always distilled through him, or one of his few high priests that interact with the Provincial Councilors. How the leader is chosen, picked or called is still a mystery to those outside the city.
Despite its location and climate, FrostRight has a fairly large population. Though it is unclear exactly how many people actually live in the province, it has been estimated that behind the cities great walls and between the two great mountains the population is at least 200,000. What is perhaps even more common than the people for such a remote and inhospitable area (not to mention the primary reason the natives have been able to survive) are the animals. In a strange twist of isolated evolution, the FrostRight area is home to a greater variety of carnivores than anywhere on Atla. These animals, nearly all of which are found only within the frozen mountains of the north have filled a variety of niches in the environment and don’t compete with one another for food, but compete for one another. Only a few small birds and rodents which live off the nuts and berries found in certain areas diversify the animal population and provide food for the lower level predators who in turn feed others–who in turn feed off of one another. But the few types of small herbivores are quite numerous in the more fertile areas, providing a plentiful base for the food chain.
We do know some things about the lives of the FrostRight people. Many of them work the few areas of fertile land or the underground fields growing the city’s food. Some of the natives are still proficient gatherers too. In fact, the hunting and gathering expeditions have become part ritual and part job for many of the natives where they will spend weeks in the mountains gathering the food and honoring their gods.
Few have actually seen beyond the great gate into FrostRight and those that have usually were not there under pleasant terms. It is known however, that nearly all their structures, homes, businesses, food processing facilities and more, are built into the ground with only one or two stories (if any) appearing above ground. It is a dense and busy city, though you might not know it by looking at it from afar. Networks of tunnels built into the ice and rock throughout the mountains and below the ground provide the warmth and security the people need.
The accounts of several travelers to the area (most of which have been by Provincial Councilors) have returned with tales of what can only be described as a miracle of non Magi-Tech engineering and innovation. Because the winters are often so harsh that people are unable to make it above ground for months at a time, food would seem to be a problem. But the network of tunnels and caves that start below the city and end atop the peaks of the FrostRight range prove otherwise. Near the mountain peaks where the temperature never rises above freezing are flat openings into the mountains, carved by the natives. Covering the openings are what can best be translated as dozens of ‘ice mirrors’. These mirrors are spread across the flattened sections of the mountain to collect sunlight throughout the day. Each mirror is aimed so that it directs the sun’s rays into the city’s network of tunnels. The upper tunnels sole purpose is to reflect the light from the peaks of the mountain where clouds rarely pass overhead (they usually pass below), to the underground farms built into the base.
All through the mountains surrounding the city is an extensive system of underground fields with surprisingly fertile soil (how they gathered the soil in the first place remains a mystery). With remarkable control of both the temperature and amount of sunlight each area receives, the diversity of the crops the people are able to grow is nearly that of Arodil. The fields provide enough food for the current population with no sign of famine in the recent past. Further, there seems to be enough food remaining each year for storing during the dark season.
Despite the spectacular accomplishment, the people must always be prepared. One of the most common and dangerous problems the people face is from melting mirrors. Delicately creating the mirrors takes tremendous skill and proper conditions in the ice fields. If the ice harvest is poor or inadequate, the quickly melting mirrors are unable to be replaced. Without enough ice mirrors the people will shut down entire sections of the tunnel system and save all the mirrors for the necessary crops.
Aside from the melting mirrors, rockslides, avalanches and earthquakes all pose a threat to the tunnels themselves. Luckily for the citizens, earthquakes are quite rare and the avalanches and landslides prove less dangerous (usually only filling the tunnels with snow).
The people of FrostRight are almost entirely employed in some aspect of the ice tunnels and agriculture. Those that aren’t, are employed in something similar to temple priests and clergy members where they spend their lives in religious service and ritual (more often than not, hunting). Little else is known about the area or people. That they are intent on keeping their traditions and practices untouched by outside influences wouldn’t even come close to describing the feelings of the people. Outsiders have never been welcome and to this day are killed upon sight if they enter the city limits (except for the provincial dignitaries). But hopes are high that the unrest within the city will resolve itself for the better. However, should things fall apart and either the city enter a civil war or recede from the Provincial Nation, the rest of Atla is ready to handle with whatever comes.
